Lake Wagyu Cattle Company (GLS102)
The Lake Wagyu Cattle Company (LWCC) is a farming concept that includes no real estate. Modern technology and judicious use of contractors and agistment means that the thriving "cyber farm" can be flexible and responsive to market ups and downs. Their export-heavy enterprise means that cattle by necessity need to remain in quarantine and/or collection centres much of the time.
Nevertheless, the operation could be incorporated seamlessly into an existing agricultural enterprise to great advantage. Lake Wagyu Cattle Company has been in operation since 1997 and has developed and invested in processes and systems that optimise the production of Wagyu seed-stock for both domestic and export markets.
Market development, name branding and advertising throughout Australia and many international markets, including Russia, United States, South Africa, Philippines, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia and numerous European markets has been established over many years.
The enterprise has now positioned itself to take advantage of expected improved market forces over the next few years. As indicated, the use of independent contractors and consultants has provided flexibility and cost-effective advantages that place their product in a very competitive position within the Wagyu industry. For example, they have recently established a small herd of Wagyu cattle in South Africa in response to the high demand for genetics in that country.
Australia now has the largest national herd of Wagyu and Wagyu-cross animals in the world outside of Japan. There is a worldwide demand for high quality Wagyu meat and the demand far outstrips the supply.
Australia's major feedlots have extensive Wagyu feeding programs and contract farmers to breed and supply them with full blood and crossbred Wagyu feeder steers and heifers.
Overseas countries are seeking to improve the quality of their cattle herds and develop Wagyu programs of their own to enable them to benefit from the high values attached to the higher grades of Wagyu meat.
Consequently, this year has seen major injections of capital into Wagyu production in Australia, one individual has spent $45 million AUD on the acquisition of two very large pastoral properties, including their Wagyu herds.
Stone Axe Pastoral Company based in Western Australia, is planning a vertically-integrated venture. Their initial investment budget is $100 million AUD. Both of these projects will involve the breeding of Wagyu cattle, grass feeding of the progen, feed-lotting, slaughter, boning out, packaging and export of chilled carcasses and boxed beef. They will also export live feeder steers and heifers, particularly to Japan.
